How to celebrate yourself and practice self-love

This year especially, altruism is vitally important. We’ve discovered how much we all need each other, and how much we need the broader community. However, it’s equally important to love yourself and be as good of a friend to yourself, as you are to those around you.

Helping one another

Charity, volunteer work, helping family. We’ve seen numerous examples of how to be involved and of assistance to others. However, it’s also important to be aware that there are people, careers and jobs, and situations, that will take advantage of your generosity and use up your energy, love, and gifts until you don’t have anything else to give. And that can be a recipe for disaster for your health.

It’s a practice

A way to ensure that you don’t fall into this trap is to practice self-love. If you are always putting others first and putting your own needs, health, and enjoyment on the back burner, you’ll find it starts to take a toll on you. You become exhausted, you feel like no one notices the effort you are putting in, and it becomes hard to continue to be so generous. Without taking care of yourself, it’s hard to take care of others. You may start to feel empty and alone.

By celebrating yourself, and practicing self-love, you’ll create the positive vibes and energy needed to not only live your happiest life but also have enough to go around and affect the lives of those around you too.

Reconnect with yourself

Just like you couldn’t love someone else if you didn’t know them, it’s hard to love yourself when you don’t completely know yourself. Take some time every day to be alone with your thoughts and reflect on your life. Think about the things that you love, and dream up ways that you could be adding more of this to your day today. This means that if you keep missing your favorite yoga class because you’re working late every evening, it’s time to strategize how you can revisit your schedule to ensure that the things that are important to you get done.

There are so many ways that you can reconnect with yourself. Spend some time journaling every day to reflect on your emotions and the environment you’re in. Journaling can help you work through your experiences and understand why you feel a certain way about things.

When you reconnect with yourself, you become honest about if the things in your life are serving you. You give yourself the opportunity to cut out anything that is not working in your favor to make room for the things that you love and that can propel you to more happiness. That is true self-love.

Discover what you love

That could be picking up a new hobby like playing the guitar or painting. Giving yourself time for play, and do the things you love works wonders in recharging and loving yourself. The best part is: when you go after something you are truly passionate about, you influence others to do the same, without having to say a word. You’re truly helping those around you by setting an example of going after the things that they love.

Included in doing things you love, is celebrating your progression in getting better and better. That means that if you take up playing guitar, you celebrate when you master that classic song you’ve always loved. Celebrating the win, big or small, is a great way to infuse job into an otherwise regular day

When you give yourself the opportunity to do the things you love, you become a better version of yourself, you learn more, and your happiness is infectious to everyone around you

Time for health

When we get busy, it’s often our health that takes a backseat. The problem is, without health, we can’t accomplish all of the other things we want to do. When we are healthy we can fully be there for those around us. So we need to be conscientious of how we are treating our bodies, even when the going gets tough.

That means not putting off that yearly physical, fitting in those weekly yoga sessions, and making a healthy meal instead of rushing to get convenient food.

Self-care also falls under self-love

Setting aside time for health includes your emotions and mental state as well. Clearing out the evening for a relaxing bath with candles and curling up with your favorite book can be a great way to settle your nerves and reduce stress. Sometimes some self-care time, letting go of the worries of work and responsibilities can be just what you need to feel centered and jump into your next project with more energy!

When you love yourself, the people around you can’t help but love you even more. When you respect yourself, those around you take notice and start to respect you more too! This can lead to bigger and better opportunities, a better sense of self, and overall improved health.
