What does your astrological sign mean for your health?

People have been using astrological signs to understand personality traits for centuries. If you’re familiar with the different characteristics of each sign, you might notice the bold and hardheaded tenacity of a Sagittarius or the comforting, empathetic nature of a Cancer at first meeting. In addition to explaining the inner workings of our minds and what makes us who we are, astrology can also potentially tell us about our health.


Many astrologers have linked the image of the Vitruvian Man, which depicts a male figure inscribed in a circle, with the zodiac cycle to show which signs govern different parts of the body. Of course, a health diagnosis can’t (and shouldn’t) be made based on the position of the sun, moon, and other celestial objects at the time of your birth. Your astrological sign is, however, an interesting way to learn more about yourself and potential health risks to look out for.

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

Aries can be hot-headed at times, which makes sense since the ram governs the head. Aries are prone to health issues above the neck including headaches, sinus infections, and head and face injuries. Because those born under Aries are typically competitive in nature, they are also prone to anger and stress, which can lead to adrenal exhaustion. The ram should take extra care to destress and unwind to keep health problems at bay.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

People born under Taurus are known for being stubborn in nature, not unlike the bull that represents this sign. Taurus governs the throat, neck, shoulders, and ears. According to the zodiac, those born between late April and late May are prone to colds, sore throats, and earaches. Eat plenty of fruits and veggies, get enough sleep, and drink lots of water to boost your immune system.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

The celestial twins are linked to the lungs, nose, diaphragm, and rib cage and are at risk for respiratory conditions, including allergies. Gemini, the queen of multi-tasking and overachieving, is known for trying to get a thousand things done at once. This can leave those born under the sign prone to anxiety and panic attacks. Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

Cancers are highly intuitive and emotional. However, they’re not always likely to show how they’re feeling. Bottling up these emotions can lead to stomach and digestive issues, including acid reflux. If you identify with Cancer, you’re likely the person all of your friends come to when they need someone to listen. Though, your digestive health may benefit from being the one who speaks up and unloads emotions for once.

Leo (July 23 - August 22)

This fire sign is passionate, extremely generous, and known for having an open heart. Incidentally, Leo governs the heart and circulatory systems, putting people born under the sign at risk for high blood pressure, blocked arteries, and irregular heartbeat. Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

Virgo is an earth sign known for being practical, logical, and a perfectionist. Capricorn (December 23 - January 19)

Capricorns are responsible and determined. When a Capricorn sets a goal, she’ll do anything to achieve it. While these are admirable qualities, all of that hard work can take a physical toll and lead to bone and joint problems. The knees, in particular, cause the most issues for this earth sign. Try incorporating low-impact exercises like swimming, and don’t let your stubborn side prevent you from slowing down when your body needs rest.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)

The last air sign of the zodiac, Aquarians take their individuality seriously and have a fierce desire for freedom. Those born under this sign are constantly on the move and tend to have a rebellious streak, putting them at risk for ankle and leg injuries. Aquarius is also associated with chronic stress and overwork, which puts a burden on the heart and circulatory system. Take a bath with some essential oils to soothe sore muscles and relieve emotional tension after a particularly stressful day.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

Pisces are compassionate, empathetic, and sensitive individuals who easily absorb the energy in a room. Astrologers believe these qualities can weaken the immune system and leave those born under the sign at risk for catching colds. Be sure to get plenty of sleep to boost your immunity. As the last sign of the zodiac, Pisces also rules the feet, leaving this sign prone to corns, bunions, and other foot problems.
